The Proverbs 31 Woman: Not What You Think

Posted by Dr. Steven Ball on October 16, 2025

When we think about the Proverbs 31 woman, many of us immediately picture an impossible checklist that no one could ever complete. But what if we've been reading this passage all wrong? What if Proverbs 31 isn't meant to be a burden of perfection, but rather a beautiful picture pointing us toward something - or someone - much greater?

What Is the Proverbs 31 Woman Really About?

The Proverbs 31 woman has often been misunderstood as either a checklist for women to achieve or a shopping list for men seeking the perfect wife. Both approaches miss the deeper truth: this passage is about wisdom personified, ultimately pointing us to Jesus Christ.

The structure of Proverbs itself tells this story. It begins with a father writing to his son about two women - Folly and Wisdom. Folly offers instant gratification but leaves you empty. Wisdom requires hard work and delayed gratification but offers lasting fulfillment. The entire book of Proverbs teaches us what it looks like to live wisely in different seasons and circumstances.

The Connection Between Ruth and the Excellent Wife

Interestingly, in Hebrew Bibles, the Book of Ruth immediately follows Proverbs. This isn't coincidental. When Proverbs 31:10 asks "An excellent wife who can find?" the answer comes in the very next book: Ruth. Ruth exemplifies the Proverbs 31 woman through her loyalty, wisdom, and fear of the Lord.

Understanding the Proverbs 31 Husband

We often overlook that the first part of Proverbs 31 describes the husband - a righteous king who shows restraint, protects the vulnerable, and judges fairly. This godly woman has a godly husband who supports and cherishes her.

The relationship is crucial: he doesn't expect anything from his wife that he doesn't promote and support. He provides the means for her to flourish - servants, resources, and encouragement. At the end of their lives together, he looks at all the women in the world and declares that she surpasses them all.

Why Most Verbs Are Past Tense

Here's something most English translations miss: the majority of verbs describing the Proverbs 31 woman are in past tense. This suggests we're reading about a woman at the end of her life, reflecting on all the different seasons and stages she navigated wisely.

She didn't do everything simultaneously. During some seasons she rose early to prepare food. In others, she had time to consider purchasing fields. When she had young children, she relied more heavily on her servants. This isn't a daily checklist - it's a lifetime of wise living.

What Does Wisdom Look Like in Daily Life?

The Proverbs 31 woman demonstrates several key characteristics of wisdom:

She consistently blesses others - Wisdom serves willingly and proactively
She prepares for the future - Both spiritually and physically ready
She provides for her household - Meeting needs with excellence
She speaks with kindness - Truth delivered with love
She fears the Lord - The foundation of all true wisdom

Most importantly, "charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." At the end of life, what matters isn't external beauty or superficial charm, but a heart that reveres God.

How Does Jesus Fulfill the Proverbs 31 Description?

When we look closely at the Proverbs 31 woman, we see Jesus Christ perfectly fulfilling every aspect:

She serves proactively - Jesus came not to be served, but to serve
She prepares feasts - Jesus is the bread of life who feeds us spiritually
She protects with scarlet - Jesus protects us with His scarlet blood
She considers a field and plants a vineyard - Jesus redeemed the world and we are His vineyard
She clothes herself with strength and dignity - Jesus is clothed with righteousness and majesty

Jesus is the only person who ever lived Proverbs 31 perfectly. He embodies complete wisdom and then imparts that wisdom to His people.

The Church as the Bride of Christ

Just as the Proverbs 31 woman has a loving husband who cherishes and provides for her, Jesus cherishes His bride - the church. He clothes us with His righteousness, provides everything we need for service, and enables us to shine with His character.

The church becomes like the Proverbs 31 woman not through our own effort, but through Christ's transforming work in us.

How Should We Apply This Wisdom?

Wisdom Is Relational, Not Just Knowledge

Growing in wisdom isn't about checking off a list of behaviors. It's about growing in relationship with God through Jesus Christ. As we know Him better, His character naturally shapes ours.

Value What God Values

Instead of chasing things that provide temporary satisfaction, pursue what brings lasting fulfillment. Value the excellent wife over folly, delayed gratification over instant pleasure, wisdom over worldly success.

Live So Others Honor God Through You

The goal isn't to impress people with our achievements, but to live in such a way that others see Christ in us and give glory to God.

Life Application

This week, instead of trying to accomplish a checklist of "wise" behaviors, focus on growing closer to Jesus Christ. Let His character shape how you live. Whether you're a man or woman, married or single, young or old - pursue wisdom by pursuing Christ.

Remember that wise living is Christian living. Even when life doesn't go as planned, keep trusting Christ, keep living righteously, and keep loving others. Rely on God's strength to transform you rather than trying to change yourself through willpower alone.

Questions for Reflection:

Am I pursuing wisdom as a relationship with Christ, or am I treating it like a checklist to complete?
What does it look like for me to value what God values in my current season of life?
How can I rely more on God's strength to transform my character rather than my own effort?
In what ways can I live so that others see Christ in me and give glory to God?
