5 Day Devotional - The Passover Connection: Understanding God's Salvation Through the Lord's Supper

Day 1: The Perfect Sacrifice

Devotional
In ancient Egypt, God required a perfect, unblemished lamb to save families from judgment. This wasn't arbitrary - it pointed to something greater. Every family had to choose a lamb, care for it, and then sacrifice it to shield them from God's wrath. This beautiful yet sobering picture finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, our perfect Passover Lamb. Unlike the temporary protection of animal blood, Jesus' sacrifice provides eternal salvation. His perfection wasn't just moral - He was God in flesh, the only one qualified to bear the weight of our sins. When we understand that Jesus took the wrath we deserved, it transforms how we view both His love and our need for Him. The cross wasn't just a demonstration of love; it was the only way justice and mercy could meet.

Bible Verse
'Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.' - Exodus 12:3-14

Reflection Question
How does understanding Jesus as your perfect Passover Lamb change the way you view His sacrifice for you personally?

Quote
Jesus is our Passover lamb. Jesus is satisfying God's wrath against us.

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being the perfect sacrifice I could never be. Help me never take Your blood lightly, but live in grateful response to Your amazing love.

Day 2: Shielded by Love

Devotional
God's wrath isn't the angry outburst of a temperamental deity - it's love in action against everything that destroys His children. When we see judgment in Scripture, we're witnessing a holy God who cannot tolerate sin because of how it hurts those He loves. The Israelites needed protection not because God was unfair, but because sin brings death. Today, we still need that same protection. Every person faces the reality of standing before a holy God, and our sins separate us from Him. But here's the incredible news: Jesus stepped between God's wrath and us. He didn't minimize our sin or pretend it didn't matter. Instead, He absorbed the full weight of God's judgment on our behalf. This isn't just ancient history - it's personal. The wrath that should have fallen on you was poured out on Jesus at the cross.

Bible Verse
'The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.' - Romans 1:18-23

Reflection Question
How does knowing that God's wrath is actually love in action change your understanding of His character?

Quote
God's wrath is love in action. What we should see about God's wrath is God isn't just God's. Not just like this angry giant or this dude with, I don't know, lightning bolts in heaven striking down Egypt.

Prayer
Father, thank You that Your wrath against sin shows how much You love me. Help me trust in Jesus' protection and live in the freedom of Your grace.

Day 3: Patient Grace

Devotional
God could execute judgment today. He has every right to end this world and call everyone to account. Yet He waits. Not because He's forgotten about justice, but because His heart breaks for those who don't yet know Him. Every sunrise is another opportunity for someone to discover Jesus. Every day you wake up is evidence of God's patience - both for you and for others in your life who need Him. This patience isn't weakness; it's incredible strength and love. God restrains His judgment because He desires that none should perish. Think about the people in your life who don't know Jesus yet. God's patience with this world might be specifically for them. His delay in returning isn't about being slow - it's about being merciful. This should fill us with both gratitude and urgency. We're living in the days of God's grace, and that grace extends to everyone around us.

Bible Verse
'But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.' - 2 Peter 3:8-9

Reflection Question
Who in your life might God be patiently waiting for, and how can you be part of His plan to reach them?

Quote
Like our God is waiting to execute judgment. He's not delaying. He's going to come back. He's going to execute judgment. Everybody will stand before God. But he's waiting one more day that one more person might come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Maybe today, that day is you.

Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your incredible patience with me and with this world. Give me Your heart for those who don't know You yet.

Day 4: Clean Out the Leaven

Devotional
Before celebrating Passover, Jewish families would search their homes with candles, removing every trace of leaven. This wasn't just about bread - it was about purity and preparation. As believers, we need the same kind of spiritual housecleaning. Sin has a way of starting small and taking over, like leaven spreading through dough. Maybe it's unforgiveness toward someone who hurt you, or a habit you've been justifying, or attitudes that don't reflect Christ. The goal isn't perfection - it's honesty and action. God knows you're not perfect, and pretending otherwise helps no one. But He does call you to deal with the sin you're aware of. This isn't about earning salvation; it's about living worthy of the salvation you've already received. When you remove the 'leaven' from your life, you're making room for God to work more freely in and through you.

Bible Verse
'Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.' - 1 Corinthians 5:7-8

Reflection Question
What 'leaven' in your life needs to be removed so you can live more fully in the freedom Christ has given you?

Quote
What happens in our lives is we let a little bit of sin stay and it takes over, right? Like, it infests us. And if we don't get rid of all of that stuff, it'll start to. It's like Spider Man. Remember when Venom was on him? And it's like the black. He's, like, trying to rip it out, and he keeps going on. And, like, that's sin in your life. That's the leaven in your life. Get it all out, because you really are unleavened.

Prayer
Jesus, search my heart and show me what needs to go. Give me courage to remove anything that hinders my relationship with You and others.

Day 5: Living Proof

Devotional
The Israelites couldn't just believe in the lamb's power - they had to apply its blood to their doorposts. Faith without action isn't really faith at all. Today, many people know about Jesus, but knowing about Him and truly believing in Him are different things. True faith shows up in how you live. Your obedience becomes the clearest evidence that you genuinely believe the gospel. This doesn't mean you have to be perfect, but it does mean your life should reflect your faith. When you forgive someone who hurt you, when you choose honesty over convenience, when you serve others sacrificially - these actions prove that Jesus is truly your Lord. The Lord's Supper reminds us that we're not just remembering a historical event; we're proclaiming an ongoing reality. Jesus died, Jesus rose, and Jesus is coming back. Until He returns, our lives should be living testimonies of His transforming power.

Bible Verse
'If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, "Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame." For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."' - Romans 10:9-13

Reflection Question
What specific actions in your life demonstrate that Jesus is truly your Lord and not just someone you know about?

Quote
Our obedience stands as the clearest evidence that we truly believe the gospel. That makes sense. Our obedience, right? The way you live your life is the clearest evidence that we truly believe the gospel.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help my life be living proof of my faith in You. May my actions consistently reflect that You are my Lord and Savior.
